Abbasi is a typeface family originally designed by Cyrus Sams for the Iranian daily Aftab, and later for use in English and Urdu. It's influenced by the calligraphic hand used in Arabic and Persian calligraphy. This font has been used extensively across Asia to write Urdu, Hindi, Marathi and Bengali. In India it is known as Raj Kapoor Hindi Font. Recently it has been found to be attractive enough for rendering Sanskrit as well. The lack of well designed typefaces in Devanagari for Indian Languages had necessitated the use of printers' fonts. Characters were designed by Surti, Banerji, Gupta, Dutt and others in the 1940s. The typeface has been classified as being representative of the "adjudication typography" style. It was relaunched in 1997 by Cyrus Samii under the guidance of Dr Nasser Ansari. The font is packaged with many Linux distributions or freely downloadable from several websites such as Losttype and sourceforge. There is a free font called Abbasi by Arshul Typologies available for download at the site of the "International Alphabet and Font Project" and used in Unicode. The font is packaged by Fedora, SuSE and others for Linux/UNIX systems. http://fontfabrication. com/abbasi/ http://fontfabrication. cfa1e77820
