Heidi is an early 20th century Swiss children’s novel by author Johanna Spyri, originally published in German. It tells the story of a young girl named Heidi, who is brought to live with her aging grandfather in the Swiss Alps. The book was published in 1881 and translated into English in 1884. It has since been translated into over 50 languages The story begins when Heidi's aunt Dete takes her from their home to visit some relatives who are living near Frankfurt am Main. After one particularly frightening incident on the way, Dete abandons Heidi at her Aunt Alphey's home without even bothering to introduce her or explain why she is there. After the first night, Heidi discovers she is hungry and ventures into the mountains to find food. She meets another girl named Nanni who has lost her father (a shepherd), and the two become good friends. They travel together for a few weeks, until they learn that Alphey is planning to send Heidi back to Switzerland, but only if her grandfather gives a large sum of money as ransom. Heidi and Nanni decide to travel together once more, but have trouble finding food. Eventually they come across a cottage where they meet a kindly old man named Hans Muller. He tells them about himself and his farmhouse, which is surrounded by beautiful meadows of alpine flowers. He offers to let Heidi stay with him a while, and she happily accepts. Heidi and Nanni even come up with a small plot of land that is perfect for a garden. Heidi eventually finds out that her grandfather has been ill since the time of her departure, and is to leave his home to go to Frankfurt because his eyesight has been failing. She also finds out that the doctor in Frankfurt is Dete's uncle, which is why she took Heidi in the first place. Heidi decides to go home to Switzerland again, but promises Nanni that she will be back someday to visit her. The two say a tearful goodbye. After a few days, Heidi decides that it is best to go home. She feels guilty for never visiting Nanni again, so she makes a promise to her that she will have many more wonderful adventures before going back to her grandfather. Soon after she arrives at the train station in Zurich, Heidi meets a friend of Dete's named Fritz who is working as a porter for the train company. He takes Heidi home with him and shows her around town for the rest of the day. The next day, he shows her the town and then takes her to his house which is located on top of a small hill and surrounded by beautiful trees and flowers. When they arrive home, Heidi meets Fritz's grandfather, who tells her that she is welcome to stay with them as long as she likes. That night, she has a few very scary dreams about wolves and the moon. In the morning she wakes up and since nothing from her dream has changed from the night before, she goes outside to pick flowers as a symbol of her gratitude for being there. cfa1e77820
